Back in the day, there was uBrew. If you fancied getting into brewing and didn’t have the space or equipment to do it yourself, they had a nice sized space in Jamaica Road with decent amounts of both. And for those of us too lazy to make beer but keen to drink it, their taproom opened up every weekend so you could sample what they’d been up to. Sadly, they couldn’t make the financial side of all this work, and they went into messy liquidation in the autumn of 2019. As we said on our own obituary for the place, “uBrew was a lovely idea, and it feels right for the Mile to have a business like this on it: it's a shame it couldn't have been managed better.”
Three years later, we now have Mash Paddle Brewing, tucked away at the end of Enid Street after Moor, Cloudwater, Brew By Numbers, Bianca Road and Craft Beer Junction: so at the very least, they shouldn’t have a problem with attracting passing trade. Like uBrew, they’re offering space and equipment for people who want to brew their own beers: they’re running it primarily as a membership scheme, where members can commit to subscriptions for several months at a time. The aim is to make it ’London's only incubator for startup brewers,’ although for amateur dabblers they’ll also run brewing classes and experiences if you ask them nicely. Is this a more sensible business model? Well, we’ll have to wait and see.
But in the meantime, we can talk about how it works as a taproom for lazy non-brewers like ourselves. Quite nicely, as it turns out, even though they’ve only got two beers on tap – on the day of the visit, there’s one of their own named As Yet Unnamed, and a guest from Lost & Grounded. There’s also a decent selection of guests in bottles and cans to drink on the premises or take away, going beyond the usual suspects you get in these circumstances – at least one of the staff is wearing a Fort Lapin t-shirt, and a few of theirs are racked up in the fridge. And they’ve made good use of the outdoor space, with lots of people taking advantage of it on a hot summer’s Saturday afternoon. So, a nice addition to the Mile overall, and it’ll be interesting to see how the brewing side of the business progresses.
